House for rent – Rio Olympics, Brazil, 2016 – near Rio de Janeiro
We are an English/Brazilian couple, so we are very well placed to help with travel queries, problems and tourist suggestions that may arise whilst you are here. Keith is a retired English academic, married to Fatima, a Brazilian teacher of Portuguese. Fatima built the house when she started teaching and Keith and Fatima together have renovated the house since marrying in 2011, adding a swimming pool and BBQ área which guests are welcome to enjoy.
This property is in Niteroi, just across the Guanabara Bay from Rio de Janeiro and ideal as a base for the Olympics here in Brazil. Just half an hour from the International Airport (as long as it is not rush hour!) The property is set in a quiet uphill cul de sac in the Estancia Pendotiba in Maria Paula, a quiet área of Niteroi.
It is a 20 minute bus ride down to the ferry and a delightful 20 minute ferry journey across to Rio and not long from there to the Maracana Stadium which is on the underground Metro. For football games away from Rio, the journey to the airport is a quick and easy taxi ride (between R$90 – 110, roughly #25 – 30). And, for sports for which you don’t have tickets we have a large screen HD television in a comfortable lounge área.
The property will sleep up to ten people (eleven at a squeeze) if we are here; accommodated in three bedrooms and a common area on the first floor. If there are more than that we can also let the self-contained flat which will take another couple and one on an airbed, and we would go and sleep at our beach property (see the “Jacone property”, also here on the website, in case you’d rather be there!) So, up to 14 (fourteen) people altogether, four or five of whom will be on air mattresses on the floor. We would prefer Family groups if possible please.
A shaded veranda leads through the front door into the main living area of the house…
There is a large dining and living area on the ground floor with a 42 inch HD TV and stairs leading to the first floor.
A short passage way leads to a large remodelled kitchen with a breakfast bar seating four as well as gas oven and hob, microwave, fridge freezer, kitchen sink and cupboards. There is also a kitchen table seating four people. Crockery and pots enough for 12 people
Off the passage is a large modern shower room, with toilet and wash-hand basin. And there is a washing area outside on the same level with an automatic washing machine available for guests.
A few steps lead up to a shaded sitting area for those hot days when you need to get out of the sun. More steps lead up to a swimming pool and patio, with a shower area for those warm days when you need to cool off in the water, or just sun-bathe. Use plenty of sun-cream – the sun can be scorching here even in our “winter” . Just as a matter of interest, Rio de Janeiro had its coldest winter temperature ever in 2013 – a “balmy” 13 degrees Celsius (about 56 degrees Fahrenheit) but most days it is over 20 degrees Celsius even during the winter months.
Underneath the house is a shaded garage to keep your hire-car cool during the day and off the road at night.
The Terrace & BBQ area
A few more steps will take you up to our large terrace and separate BBQ area. The terrace has a table tennis table if you feel energetic enough to play. The BBQ area has a built-in BBQ and a wood-burning stove and heated oven for those adventurous enough to master outdoor culinary arts beyond the normal BBQ fare.
Fillet steak is very modestly priced here in Brazil so those pre- and post-match BBQs can be a real treat. We also have a refrigerator upon the terrace to keep your beer nice and cold. Serving warm beer is considered very anti-social here in Brazil.
First Floor indoors.
The steps from the living area bring you to the main sleeping accommodation. We have three bedrooms, all with air-conditioning and fans if you should need them and they are all en-suite. The largest room has a double bed and a single bed. There is a slim screen TV in this bedroom.
The other two bedrooms have double beds ,the larger room has space for an airbed on the floor. There is also a large common area upstairs which could be used for sleeping two or three people (on airbeds; those sleeping here can use the large bathroom downstairs). There is a small balcony over-looking the street off this area…
The en-suite bathrooms all have showers and the bathroom of the master bedroom has a hydro-massage bath, for when the table-tennis has been too much!
